Karen Chapman

Meet your instructor:

Do you struggle to…

  • Plant a garden that looks good year-round?
  • Avoid a “hodge podge” and combine plants in an artistic way?
  • Figure out what plants will thrive in difficult spots?
  • Establish screening from neighbors and eyesores?
  • Design container gardens that enhance your home and landscape?
  • Thwart tenacious deer?
  • Design a simpler, lower maintenance garden?

Then you are in the right place!

I can help you with all of these common gardening frustrations and a whole lot more.

With a lifetime’s gardening experience in England and the U.S.A., training as a Certified Professional Horticulturist and over 15 years as an award-winning designer, author and presenter, I can help you solve all these problems.

In the Greater Seattle area, I offer custom, innovative landscape design, landscape consultations through my business Le jardinet to help you troubleshoot problem areas or realize a vision, and even a Personal Container Coach service where I teach you design tips and tricks as we shop together.

Live farther afield? No problem. I teach several informative, online video classes and workshops, and offer a variety of gardening-related presentations across the country; check my schedule to see if I'll be in your neighborhood this year!

I have co-authored two books with Christina Salwitz; the award winning Fine Foliage (St. Lynn’s Press, 2013) and the highly acclaimed Gardening with Foliage First (Timber Press, 2017), and  my latest book  is Deer-Resistant Design (Timber Press, 2019). You may also have come across my articles and designs featured in many national gardening publications including Fine Gardening, Country Gardens, Sunset, and Garden Design.

Specializing in creating artistic plant combinations with a four season foliage framework, functional outdoor living spaces and deer resistant, summer-dry designs, I am excited to share my knowledge and love of gardening with you.
